Bed & fridge removal
The back end of the vehicle is severely unsupported in both corners, since the extension beam (welded to the orginal van frame) under the original chassis is a singular bar in the middle (think of an inverted capital “T” with all the weight falling on either side). The former grey and black tanks were under these respective corners, adding weight to the sides and stressing the unsupported wooden framing. This led to the bedroom and bathroom dropping down in both the left and right corners and the entire rig being structurally unleveled. This was a yikes moment, knowing some major work will need to be done to the floor in the future. Removing the platform for the bed exposed the old water tank and was a fairly easy task, and I also found one of the old heater vents underneath.
The first time I needed help was the fridge. Until this point I had done all of the demolition on my own. Even though I was able to locate and disassemble the connections for this old Dometic fridge, it was extremely heavy and I couldn’t even push it an inch out of its spot, let alone lift it on my own. My dad was able to shimmy it out and carefully carry it outside. This fridge works but it’s old and rough, plus our plan is to have an electrical system that can handle a typical household or apartment fridge, as opposed to this older Dometic style that is contingent on gas combustion for use.
